On wedding dresses and bike riding.

This weekend just gone, I barely stopped to breathe.

Early Saturday morning I did a warm-up ride for the Freeway bike hike on Sunday morning. Content that I was ready I came home and scoffed down a giant bowl of nutra-grain before heading out with one of my beautiful bridesmaids, Beth, to do that magical once in a lifetime shop...wedding dresses! I was nervously excited. I had looked at a million-and-one pictures online and was pretty set on what I wanted. So I figured it would be easy right? Well, not exactly. I walked into one of the many bridal stores on Oxford Street feeling pretty overwhelmed while being surrounded by a lot of tule, poofiness, and “Who-would-wear-that!” kind of dresses. In my hand I had a picture of the dress that I was told they stocked and was adamant this was “the one”. The shop consultant, Dianne, introduced herself to me somewhat excited that this was my first time looking and trying on dresses. She showed me the dress and it was beautiful! But before trying it on she assured me to try on four other dress, completely different to the other one, just in case. I’m glad I didn’t refuse. One was okay, one was hideous, one was extremely heavy, one was too plain and they all were just not me. But I was happy to try them on to see what they looked like and as Dianne said “play around with styles”. So when it finally got round to trying on the dress and looking in the mirror I wanted to do a fist pump in the air. It was everything I expected and more. Easy and Done.

Not quite. We still had two more bridal stores to visit. I figured that I should probably try on a few more, just in case. A short drive across to Beaufort Street and into Hobnob Bridal we walked into what I assume the Vera Wang store in New York would look like. Fancy would be an understatement to describe this bridal store beauty. If I was to find a dress here, my bank account was going to take a punch. The store was huge and it was buzzing with at least a dozen brides-to-be. Just to add to it’s fanci-ness, it even boasted a string duo. It was then I started looking around for the caviar being served. I probably would have walked straight out the door.

But none the less, this glamorous boutique stocked some beautiful dresses. I picked out a few including one that was quite simple yet nice looking on the rack but I didn’t think much of it. However upon trying it on I was once again instantly in love! It was a style that I had not even considered when looking at pictures nor did I pictured myself wearing. But I was totally loving this dress! For once in my life I appreciated my curves and the way the dress made them look flattering. It was simple, elegant and I felt amazing! But there was my problem. I now I had and still have, two amazing/beautiful/GORGEOUS dresses to choose from. First world problems.

*Not my photograph but a stunning image I found of a bride on Pinterest (My favourite website I have bookmarked for when I'm bored!)

This weekend I am returning to the bridal dress world to try on both the dresses again. I never wanted to do this to myself and I don’t know how I’m going to make the decision or what will help me decide. Obviously I can’t show photo’s of either because that will only be revealed when I walk down the ailse in 9 months time!

Sunday’s bike hike along the freeway was an accomplishment that I am so proud to have achieved. Last year I got back on the fitness and health bandwagon and upon returning from our overseas trip I began training for the RAC freeway bike hike for Asthma...32km from Currumbine to the city. It was an awesome experience that I wish I could do again this weekend! Going to Spin and RPM classes 3 times a week has become a routine on top of 2 Pump sessions and a netball game. Having raised $100 for the cause I had set myself a goal to do the ride in just under an hour but was probably a bit too eager when I completed it in just over. I am still happy. The ride itself was brilliant and enjoyable. I put together a playlist of some music tracks from RPM to help get me through. The train ride there was long and cramped with hundreds of other cyclists squished like sardines on the train. Once I got passed the crowd at the start line and set myself at a decent pace I soaked it all in. It was a typically gorgeous sunny day with a slight head-wind that made it that extra bit challenging. I even managed to keep up and ride behind three professional cyclists for about 2km until we got to a long incline. In those 2km I got a taste of Tour de France! I paced myself for most of the race until the last 4km. As soon as I came over the bend and saw the city I got a rush of excitement and pedaled my heart out until I crossed the finish line. I did it! The ride itself wasn’t as hard as I was expecting but I felt that was because I was ready, prepared and fit and I will certainly do it again next year...maybe even the 60km! Next on the list? An easy 4km fun run in May and two challenging bike hikes at the end of the year. Bring. it. on.

Thanks to Pete for these snaps!

We did it!

Exhausted. But after a stretch on the yoga mat, I was ready to do it again!

In a nutshell...

Average
//Cockroaches. Filthy. Disgusting. Gross. Need I say more. Why were these creatures even invented? And what’s worse...the one’s in Perth have wings and can fly! With a nice downpour of rain today after warm weather, the roaches are out and the Mortein is getting a good workout
//Having to ride home on Sunday after the bike hike thanks to TransPerths disorganisation. I was already tired and wasn’t prepared. Long story. But breakfast tasted even better after it

Awesome

//Having a really great discussion with one of my year 12 classes on gay marriage. Controversial topic, opinions flying round left, right and centre but at the same time, it was a very interesting and mature discussion. Proud as punch.
//The photography workshop that I also did on the weekend (I bulked achieved right?!). I learned a range of new things on my DSLR and I’m hoping to get out this weekend and put it to some use//
//Julia Gillard visiting our school today. It’s not often you get to see the Prime Minister in real life. All of a sudden my year 8 students became political experts.

//The view of Perth city on a bike ride. This one deserves a second mention. Perth is one good-looking city. Especially on a bike.
//This coming weekend. 5 days rest. Easter. Hot Cross Buns. Can’t wait.
